Full pay Jacks or Better gives an Expected Value (EV) of 99.544% whenplayed optimally. Actually, this is one of the simplest games, sooptimal play is truly within reach of anyone who wants to work at itfor a while. The strategy given below is a complete, optimal strategy. The bulk of the strategy is 'basic', meaning that it does not requireconsideration of penalty cards. The five additional rules toget optimal EV are given following the basic strategy, but they addonly about 0.001% to the basic strategy, and so can be ignored unlessyou demand perfection.
- Video poker can be a very fun game to play, but you surely need to understand the basic math to make correct decisions at the table. One of the most overlooked things in video poker is differences in pay tables. Many players are not aware that Jacks or Better video poker actually has many “variations.”.
- Jacks or Better Simple Introduction The following strategy is my 'simple strategy' for jacks or better video poker. Using the strategy on a fullpay. Machine will result in an expected return of 99.46%.Compared to the optimal strategy return of 99.54%, mistakes in the simple strategy will cost 0.08%, or one total bet every 1178 hands.
Basic Strategies
Fort McDowell Casino in Fountain Hills, Arizona. The vpFREE2 database reveals 10 casinos in the.
A 'basic' strategy for video poker only ranks the competing cards youmight hold (the 'holds'), while a 'mixed' strategy considers theparticular discards when deciding what to hold. For example, thecorrect basic strategy for 9/6 Jacks or Better is to hold JTs (Jack andTen in the same suit) in preference to KJ (King and Jack of differentsuits). This is derived from considering all possible flops (initialhands) containing KsJhTh that do *not* contain something better thanKJ or JTs (for example KK or KQJT) and computing which holding has thebetter expectation over those flops taken as a whole. A mixedstrategy will sometimes hold KJ and other times hold JTs, depending onwhat the extra cards are. For example, if one of the extra cards isin the same suit with JTs, the KJ is a better hold.
Now, what I call a 'best basic' strategy is the best possible basicstrategy for a particular game. This is to contrast it with theoptimal strategy, which is the best mixed strategy. Best basicstrategies are important because we can actually play a perfectstrategy in the casino (playing an optimal strategy without the aid ofa computer is just about impossible unless you have some very unusualabilities). In any case, we can often find a perfect strategy that'swithing a hair's breadth of optimal. My Best Basicstrategy for the popular Full Pay (9/6) Jacks or Better game. It's only0.00097% below optimal strategy in expectation. This is the strategythat appears on my video poker strategy cards, available onmy VP page.
[BTW, I think it's a lot easier to play the strategy from my cardsthan from the typical linear listing used to give strategies, such asthe one at the end of this note.]
As far as I know, I'm the only one that has a (self-written) programto evaluate a strategy (rather than a game -- there are severalcommercial programs for calculating the expectation for the optimalstrategy for a given game). [Sorry, I'm not planing to turn myprogram into a commercial product.] I suspect that many of thepublished strategies are claiming higher expectations than they reallydeliver. For example, Lenny Frome's 9/6 strategy as published in_Winning Strategies for Video Poker_ has a claimed expectation of99.5%, but I calculate its return as only 99.365%. If you play 600hands per hour on a $.25 machine, this return is $1.33/hour worse thanmy strategy. (Not much perhaps, but it adds up.)
After the Best Basic strategy, I give the variations (using penaltycards) that turn it into an optimal strategy.

The EV numbers given below are derived from computing the actual EVthat the given hold has over the hands in which the strategy plays it.The '**'s indicate inversions --- places where the EV value wouldmisorder the hands. In all cases, go by the hand order rather thanthe EV value.
Note: For those of you that have my strategy cards, you may notice the numbers given here do not match those on the cards. The cards present the information in a simpler way, but the strategyis exactly equivalent.
Some abbreviations are used in the listing. In many cases, anexplicit list of hands (possibly elided) is also given.'4cd Flush' means thatyou hold a four card flush. '3cd Ins Str Flush', or three cardinside straight flush, refers to a straight with one gap such asTh8h7h. A 'Dbl Ins Str' is a double inside straight, or a straightwith two gaps. Note that A234 is an inside straight draw andA23 is a double inside straight draw.
